History

The Leone de Castris company, founded in 1665 by Oronzo Arcangelo Maria Francesco dei Conti di Lemos, is one of the longest-lived in Italy. In 1943 the winery created the legendary Five Roses, the first rosé bottled in Italy, thus renamed by an American general who asked for a large supply to be sent to the United States. Today the production includes about 2.5 million bottles and combines the traditional vines with international vines such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon. The commercial network exports their products all over the world.

Production method

The grape harvest takes place around the end of September, with an over-ripening which keeps the sugar content of the wine higher. The vineyards from which the grapes come have an average age of about 30 years, an element that gives complexity to the product. The wine is fermented until it develops an alcohol content of 13.5% and retains a certain degree of sweetness. The product ages for at least 6 months in steel and for a minimum of 3 months in the bottle, before being placed on the market.

Tasting notes

At sight the wine has an intense ruby ​​red color with violet hues. On the nose aromas of rose, cherry jam and wild berries, herbaceous and eucalyptus notes and iodized minerality, with pleasant notes of toasted almonds. In the mouth it is enveloping, soft and mellow, supported by good acidity and final tannins, which make it particular as a dessert wine.

Possible combinations

Leone de Castris Negrino is ideal as an end of meal or dessert wine, very pleasant for its sweetness counterbalanced by good acidity and final tannins. Perfect if combined with desserts based on dried fruit, macaroons, raspberry or cherry tarts or dark chocolate.
