History
Umani Ronchi created Jorio in the mid-1990s in collaboration with dedicated Abruzzese growers to highlight the finest expressions of Montepulciano. The wine is named in honour of the great Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio and his famous pastoral tragedy The Daughter of Jorio, celebrating the deep cultural roots of Abruzzo. The grapes come from carefully managed vineyards located throughout the region.
Grape variety
100% Montepulciano.
Vinification
The grapes are hand-harvested from late September to early October. After destemming and gentle crushing, they undergo a 10-12 day maceration in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures of 26-28 °C. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation before ageing for approximately 12 months, with about half in large oak casks and the remainder in third- and fourth-fill barriques. It then rests in bottle for several months before release.
Alcohol content
13.5%.
Tasting notes
Deep ruby red in colour. The bouquet reveals aromas of ripe plum and red cherry, followed by balsamic nuances, subtle saline hints and ripe liquorice. On the palate it is full-bodied and vigorous, supported by clean, refined tannins and a long, intense, persistent finish.
Food pairings
Excellent with meat-based pasta dishes, roast red and white meats, lamb, chicken, rabbit cacciatore, mixed grilled meats, game and aged cheeses. Its richness also makes it an ideal companion to traditional Italian cuisine.
